Algebra is "operating on unknowns...in the same way as the arithmetician operates on the known" - al Samawal (12th century scholar)
Algebra is named after al Khwarizmi's book, Al-Jabr wa-al-Muqabilah, which revolutionized mathematics. Algebra gave mathematics a new dimension and development path, away from the Greek concept of mathematics which was essentially based on geometry. Algebra was further developed by numerous Muslim mathematicians and scholars and imported into Europe after 300 years.
